Chapter 10: Entropy, predictability and predictiveness

Abstract:

Recent research on morphological complexity has employed the information-theoretical measures of entropy and conditional entropy as a way to quantify the degree to which cells in a lexeme's paradigm are predictable. In this chapter, we draw upon evidence from earlier chapters as a basis for comparing entropy measures with our measures of predictiveness and paradigm and cell predictability. We demonstrate that measures of entropy, predictability, and predictiveness reveal different patterns and are therefore complementary as elucidations of morphological complexity.
